BIoGRAPHY
Ariel Hacohen (b. 1993) is a visual artist based in Jerusalem. His work experiments with a range of photographic approaches, including snapshot and staged photography, digital image processing, and video. Hacohen’s practice explores the relationship between history, memory, and the human body. Drawing on Classical and archaeological references alongside appropriated imagery, his works combine digitization, blurring, erasure, and replication to create works that appear both multi-temporal and timeless.
Hacohen received his MA in Photography, with distinction, from the Royal College of Art (RCA), London (2022), following a BFA (Hons) from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem (2019), during which he participated in a student exchange programme at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris (ENSBA). He is currently a participant in the long-term Residency Programme at the Art Cube Artists’ Studios in Jerusalem.
About By the Rivers (2025)
By the Rivers is a seven-minute video work depicting a group of duplicated opera singers gathered on a brick platform in a desert landscape. Dressed in pyjamas, the figures lip-sync to a recording of Va, pensiero (“Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves”) from Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco.
As the landscape shifts through a cycle of sunset and sunrise, the video moves between wide views of the group and intimate close-ups of individual singers. The figures are seated on a brick platform, its fragmented structure suggesting the remains of a ruin. Drawing on the chorus’s themes of exile and longing for a lost homeland, By the Rivers reflects on ideas of home, collective memory and displacement.
