We couldn’t be more pleased to have found a home for several of Bruce’s photos in the National Gallery of Ireland’s permanent collection.
The acquired works are featured in After the Off (Dewi Lewis Publishing, 1999), a collaboration between photographer Bruce Gilden and Irish writer Dermot Healy. Gilden’s idiosyncratic flash-lit portraits capture the tone of rural Ireland’s horse-racing events, whilst Healy’s atmospheric storytelling evokes the culture and characters behind the scenes. With its 120 pages of duotone imagery and text, the book presents a vivid, almost surreal portrait of a rural tradition—at once raw, poetic and deeply humane—exploring the energy, tension and weirdness of the racetrack world and those drawn into its orbit.
