Photographer Eikoh Hosoe, a central figure in the Japanese post-war experimental arts movement, died on 16 September at the age of 91.
Hosoe is perhaps best known for his long-term creative partnership with Yukio Mishima, whom he portrayed in a series of erotically charged, dark and surreal poses in the series “Barakei” (Ordeal By Roses). The series, featured in MOMA’s permanent collection, earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Photographic Society of Japan in 1963.
